The Vietnam National Shipping Lines (Vinalines) will open a logistics centre for container shipping on December 17 as part of moves to restructure the State-owned firm, according to Deputy Director General Do Thi Ngoc Trang.

Despite improvements in performance in the first 10 months of 2018, joint-venture seaports involving state-owned ship giant Vinalines and foreign partners are struggling with stiffening competition.

SP-SSA International Terminal, located in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau’s Cai Mep area, has handled one of the highest container volumes ever from a single vessel call.

During the period, the shipping firm handled 62.93 million tons of cargo at domestic ports and transported another 18.66 million, equivalent to 64.1% and 86.9% of the year plan, respectively.

Vinalines is seeking approval from the government for building two container terminals at Lach Huyen Port in northern Hai Phong City.
